Nothing, a mobile phone manufacturer known for challenging market norms, is now considering creating its own operating system from scratch. During Techcrunch Disrupt 2024, the company’s founder and CEO, Carl Pei, confirmed that Nothing is exploring the possibility of developing a proprietary Nothing OS.
Pei highlighted the dominance of Google and Apple in the mobile operating system market, referring to it as a duopoly. He expressed interest in creating a unique operating system that would not only enhance Nothing’s impact on the industry but also serve as a new revenue stream for the company.
The development of AI technology has made building operating systems more accessible today, according to Pei. This would allow Nothing to focus on improving the user experience rather than delving into technical aspects like hardware drivers and core components. Nothing already offers an interesting skin for its Android phones, which is currently referred to as ‘Nothing OS.’
Pei emphasized that a proprietary OS would provide greater control over the user experience and potentially be more profitable than hardware, which comes with high costs and risks. By creating their own operating system, Nothing aims to differentiate itself in the competitive mobile phone market.
Just last week, Nothing announced the launch of the glow-in-the-dark Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition, further showcasing the company’s innovative approach to product development.
