On this day in 1971, a hijacker known as “Dan Cooper” (later dubbed “D.B. Cooper”) parachuted from a Northwest Orient Airlines 727 with $200,000 in ransom over the Pacific Northwest, his fate remains a mystery.

In 1859, Charles Darwin published “On the Origin of Species,” explaining his theory of evolution through natural selection.

In 1865, Mississippi enacted the first “Black Codes” aimed at limiting the rights of newly freed Black individuals, followed by other Southern states.
