License Plate Scam: The Rise of Ghost Plates

The rise of technology has made it easier for law-evading drivers to get away with breaking traffic laws. A new trend has emerged where drivers can purchase devices online that cover or obscure the identifying characters on license plates. These devices, known as “ghost plates,” are being promoted on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Amazon, making it easier for drivers to speed, evade tolls, and now even skirt congestion zone fees in major cities like New York.

Videos showcasing the application of these sneaky stickers, films, and coverings on license plates for various states have been circulating online. One company selling these products claims that their “antiradar stickers” and “Nanofilm Ecoslick” are “absolutely legal” as they make the characters on the license plate invisible to cameras while remaining visible to the naked eye. However, this claim has been refuted by traffic ticket attorney Martin Kron, who states that if the intent is to defraud, it is illegal for drivers to use these products.

In response to the growing trend of ghost plates, New York state amended its rules last year, making it illegal to sell or distribute materials designed to look like a lawful license plate but have not been legally issued by the DMV. Fines for offenders have been increased, and repeat offenders risk having their vehicle registration suspended.

Despite these regulations, New York City officials seem to be out of sync with state laws. While the state has implemented stricter measures against ghost plates, the city has proposed a new law that would fine drivers for parking with obscured license plates. The NYPD has been actively enforcing against fake plates, seizing thousands of “ghost cars” in recent years.

Following the implementation of congestion charges in the city, police have issued hundreds of summonses for improper or covered plates. Instagram and Amazon have been slow to respond to inquiries about the sale of ghost plate kits on their platforms, but efforts are being made to remove these products.

While the sale of license shading equipment may currently be unenforceable, there is a possibility that laws may change in the future to make it illegal to sell these products. In the meantime, drivers should be aware of the consequences of using ghost plates and the potential legal ramifications that may follow. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant changes in the way we live, work, and interact with one another. From social distancing measures to remote work policies, our daily routines have been upended in an effort to curb the spread of the virus. As we navigate these uncertain times, it has become increasingly important to prioritize our mental health and well-being.

The pandemic has taken a toll on our mental health in many ways. The constant fear and uncertainty surrounding the virus, as well as the isolation and loneliness that come with social distancing, have led to increased levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. Many people are also struggling with feelings of grief and loss, whether it be from the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the cancellation of important life events.

In order to cope with these challenges, it is crucial to prioritize self-care and mental health. This can take many different forms, depending on the individual and their needs. Some people may find solace in practicing mindfulness or meditation, while others may benefit from engaging in physical activity or creative outlets. It is important to find what works best for you and make it a priority in your daily routine.

Additionally, seeking support from friends, family, or mental health professionals can be incredibly beneficial during this time. Talking about your feelings and experiences with others can help to alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation, as well as provide a sense of connection and support. Many therapists and counselors are offering virtual sessions to accommodate social distancing guidelines, making it easier than ever to access mental health support.

It is also important to remember that it is okay to not be okay. These are unprecedented times, and it is normal to feel overwhelmed or anxious. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health, and seeking help when needed is a sign of strength, not weakness.

In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on our mental health, but there are steps we can take to prioritize our well-being during these challenging times. By practicing self-care, seeking support, and being kind to ourselves, we can navigate this crisis with resilience and strength. Remember, we are all in this together, and together we will get through it.
