The city of New York is experiencing a significant decrease in crime rates, with shootings at an all-time low, murders tied for the lowest ever, and a substantial decrease in shoplifting incidents. This positive trend has set a high standard for incoming Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who will need to maintain the current level of public safety.

Political consultant and former cop Hank Sheinkopf emphasized that the city’s crime under control is a result of the efforts of Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Mamdani, who has been critical of the NYPD and its staffing shortages, has requested Tisch to stay on board. Experts believe that allowing Tisch to continue her work is crucial for sustaining the city’s safety.

The latest NYPD crime statistics reveal that the city is now safer than it was even before the pandemic. November marked the safest month for the city subway system and tied for the fewest murders in any month since 2018. Tisch attributed these historic achievements to the precision policing strategy and the dedicated work of NYPD officers.

The data shows a record low of 652 shootings with 812 victims in the first 11 months of the year, a significant improvement from previous years. Additionally, there were 16 murders last month, a 46.6% decrease compared to November 2024. Subway crime has also seen a notable decline, with 167 transit crimes reported in November.

The NYPD credited targeted-policing initiatives, such as the Fall Violence Reduction Plan and quality of life and gang-busting units, for the decrease in various crimes. Mayor Eric Adams commended these strategies for making the city safer and emphasized the importance of investing in the NYPD.

As Mamdani prepares to take office, experts advise him to prioritize evidence-based strategies like precision policing. With crime at an all-time low, Mamdani has the opportunity to focus on other aspects of his agenda, such as rent control and mental health initiatives. It will be crucial for Mamdani to maintain the positive trend in crime rates and ensure the city remains safe under his leadership.

Former NYPD Commissioner William Bratton advised Mamdani to focus on his agenda items unrelated to policing and to trust Commissioner Tisch’s leadership. The challenge for Mamdani will be to continue the positive trajectory of public safety in the city. Only time will tell if Mamdani can uphold the current level of safety and security in New York City. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the recent outbreak of a new virus, known as COVID-19, a global pandemic. The virus, which originated in Wuhan, China, has since spread to over 100 countries and infected thousands of people worldwide. In response to this growing crisis, governments around the world are implementing various measures to contain the spread of the virus and protect their citizens.

One such measure that has been widely adopted is social distancing. Social distancing involves keeping a safe distance from others and avoiding large gatherings in order to reduce the risk of transmission. This practice has been recommended by health officials as an effective way to slow the spread of the virus and prevent hospitals from becoming overwhelmed with patients.

In addition to social distancing, many countries have also imposed travel restrictions and quarantine measures to prevent the further spread of the virus. Airlines have canceled flights, schools have been closed, and public events have been canceled in an effort to limit the opportunities for the virus to spread.

Health officials are also urging people to practice good hygiene, such as washing their hands frequently and avoiding touching their face. These simple measures can help prevent the spread of the virus and protect individuals from becoming infected.

As the number of cases continues to rise, it is important for people to stay informed and follow the guidelines set forth by health officials. By working together and taking proactive measures, we can help prevent the further spread of COVID-19 and protect the health and safety of our communities.
