The city of New York has seen a significant decrease in shootings and crime rates, with the NYPD reporting all-time lows in incidents so far this year. According to the department, there were 744 people shot in 596 incidents between January and October, breaking the previous record set in 2018. This achievement is attributed to the precision policing strategy implemented by the NYPD and the dedication of its officers.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised the efforts of the NYPD in achieving these historic public safety milestones, emphasizing that it is not just luck but the result of a well-executed plan. The number of murders in the city also tied a 2018 all-time low record, with only 18 homicides reported so far this year.

Subway crime also hit a record low in October, with 154 felony offenses reported on the rails. This ties the previous record set in 2020 when ridership was significantly lower due to the pandemic. The subway crime stats for both years included a single murder each.

Last month, there were 47 felony assaults, 69 grand larcenies, 36 robberies, and one burglary reported in the subway system. These numbers are lower compared to 2020 when there were 38 felony assaults, 74 grand larcenies, and 41 robberies. Hate crimes citywide also decreased by 22 percent last month, except for anti-Asian hate crimes, which increased due to a recent hate crime spree in Lower Manhattan.

Robberies on the city streets also saw a decrease of about 12 percent in October, marking the lowest level for that month since 2020. Felony assaults are trending down, and domestic violence-related assaults account for nearly 40% of the reported cases citywide. Burglaries declined by nearly 9 percent, and reported rapes increased by almost 9 percent, attributed in part to changes in the legal definition of rape.

The NYPD’s Fall Violence Reduction Plan, targeting high-crime areas, has been instrumental in keeping crime rates low. Up to 1,800 uniformed officers have been assigned to nightly foot posts in 54 zones across the city. The department has also conducted 57 gang-related takedowns this year, seizing thousands of illegal guns.

Mayor Adams commended the NYPD for their efforts in making the city safer, emphasizing that public safety has always been a top priority for his administration. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement officers and city officials have led to a significant decrease in crime rates, making New York a safer place for its residents.
