NYPD officers were involved in a shooting incident with a man who had a history of mental health issues and had lunged at them with a kitchen knife inside a home in Queens on Monday morning. The man, identified as a 22-year-old, was reported to be throwing glass against the wall by a relative, prompting the police response to the residence on Parsons Boulevard near 85th Avenue in Briarwood.
Upon arrival, the man armed himself with a large kitchen knife and advanced towards the officers. Despite attempts by a family member to restrain him, the man continued to approach the officers with the knife in hand. The officers repeatedly instructed him to drop the weapon and tried to de-escalate the situation, but the man ignored their commands and moved from the kitchen to the living room while still holding the knife.
Despite efforts to contain the situation by closing the glass door leading to the living room and issuing more commands, the man broke through the door and continued to advance towards the officers with the knife. In response, the officers discharged their weapons, injuring the man.
The wounded man was provided medical assistance by the officers and later transferred to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center for treatment. He was reported to be in stable condition and undergoing surgery. The man had no prior arrest record, but had been involved in an incident related to emotional disturbance just a month prior.
The incident, captured on the officers’ body-worn cameras, is under investigation by the department’s Force Investigation Division. The recovered knife from the scene was presented as evidence, and the officers involved were taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing the commotion, with one resident mentioning the quick unfolding of events within seconds. The suspect, described as having developmental delays and emotional disturbances, was seen being taken away by ambulance.
Overall, the incident highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement when dealing with individuals with mental health issues, emphasizing the need for proper training and protocols to handle such situations.
