Oakland Mayor’s Car Stolen from City Hall Office

Recently, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee fell victim to a brazen thief who not only stole her car but also broke into her City Hall office to obtain the keys. The black SUV was later found in Vallejo, California, after the theft incident that occurred two days ago. According to sources close to the Oakland Police Department, the thief tampered with the door of the mayor’s office to gain access to the keys.

The Oakland Police Department released a statement confirming the theft and subsequent recovery of the city-owned vehicle. They are currently investigating the incident and following up on potential leads to apprehend the culprit, for whom a warrant has been issued.

Crime Rates in Oakland

Oakland, known for its high rates of auto thefts, reported 9,914 motor vehicle theft crimes in 2024, as per FBI data. The city’s overall crime rate was four times the national average in the same year, exacerbated by a severe shortage of Oakland police officers. An independent report highlighted that the department was operating with about 280 officers short of its required strength.

Notable crimes in Oakland, such as the murder of Laney College football coach John Beam and the theft of over 1,000 historic artifacts from the Oakland Museum of California’s storage facility, have garnered media attention in recent months.

Efforts to Enhance Safety

In response to the escalating crime rates, the Oakland City Council approved a contract with Flock Safety in December to maintain safety cameras across the city. This decision followed a contentious public debate on the efficacy of such measures in curbing criminal activities.

Despite repeated attempts, representatives from Mayor Lee’s office have not provided any comments on the incident or the ongoing investigations.
