Off-duty Chicago police officer injured in exchange of gunfire with car burglars in West Lawn
An off-duty Chicago police officer sustained a minor injury during a confrontation with car burglars in the West Lawn neighborhood, according to initial reports from the scene. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported during the incident.
The officer observed a group of four men attempting to break into vehicles in the 3700 block of West 67th Place around 4:15 a.m. Upon confronting the burglars, gunfire was exchanged between the officer and the suspects. The officer reportedly returned fire after the burglars shot at him.
Following the exchange of gunfire, the suspects fled the scene in a black vehicle that had been trailing them. Investigators discovered several burglarized vehicles in the vicinity, along with scattered items that were potentially stolen or dropped by the perpetrators.
Although the off-duty officer sustained a minor injury to his ear during the altercation, it remains unclear whether the injury was caused by a bullet or shrapnel.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), responsible for investigating firearm discharges involving CPD officers, announced that their team will be dispatched to the scene. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact COPA’s office at 312-746-3609.
