An off-duty Blue Island police officer is currently in custody following a disturbing road rage incident with an off-duty Chicago police officer. The incident occurred on Saturday evening and involved the Blue Island officer allegedly firing a shot at the Chicago officer’s car.
The Chicago officer, a female who is currently on maternity leave, was a passenger in the car that was involved in a minor crash with the Blue Island officer in the 4700 block of South Union. After the crash, the Blue Island officer reportedly pulled alongside the Chicago officer’s car, drew his weapon, and fired a shot in the direction of the vehicle. The bullet struck the passenger side door barrier and ricocheted off the front windshield, fortunately causing no injuries.
Both drivers proceeded to chase each other and called 911. Illinois State Police troopers responded to the scene and stopped both cars in the 5400 block of South Wentworth. The Blue Island officer was taken into custody, and his weapon was recovered. He was then transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center due to complaints of chest pains.
A Blue Island police sergeant arrived at the scene and took custody of their officer’s police ID and uniform sweater. The Chicago Police Department issued a statement regarding the incident, stating that a male driver, 47, inside a Toyota, discharged a firearm towards a GMC in traffic. The GMC was struck by gunfire, causing damage, but thankfully, there were no reported injuries. The offender was taken into custody without incident, and charges are pending as area detectives investigate the matter.
