The recent announcement by Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters marks a polarizing shift in the state’s educational initiatives: every high school in Oklahoma will establish a chapter of Turning Point USA. In a video released over the weekend, Walters declared this move as a vital step toward reclaiming educational spaces from what he termed “radical leftist teachers’ unions.”

In his enthusiastic address, Superintendent Ryan Walters stated, “I’m thrilled to share that we’re launching a Turning Point USA chapter in each Oklahoma high school. There has been a tremendous surge of interest from parents, educators, and students eager to engage in the important work of Turning Point, which emphasizes free speech, an active dialogue about American values, and a celebration of our nation’s accomplishments.”

Walters’ rhetoric conveys urgency, as he asserted, “For too long, our classrooms have been dominated by radical ideologies that undermine parental rights, alienate families, and misrepresent American history. We’re committed to ensuring that students grasp the concepts of American exceptionalism, participate in civic discussions, and engage meaningfully in the dialogue about our democracy.”

This isn’t the first time Walters has captured national headlines. In August 2024, he made waves by proclaiming that Oklahoma would be the pioneering state to reintroduce the Bible into classroom instruction, also establishing an office dedicated to religious liberty and patriotism. Furthermore, in May 2025, he announced that schools would analyze voter fraud and investigate the irregularities surrounding the 2020 election.

Walters’ readiness to challenge what he views as the “toxic hatreds” propagated by the left has certainly positioned him as a controversial figure—a self-declared champion of educational reform.
