The VIG, a popular bar located in Old Town, is taking legal action against a concealed carry holder who accidentally fired his gun inside the establishment. The incident took place in the early hours of July 3, 2022, resulting in a bullet ricocheting off the floor and injuring another patron. Despite clear signs prohibiting guns on the premises, the bar claims that the individual, identified as Michael Davis, had a pistol in his pocket that discharged while he was at the bar. Davis, who had consumed alcohol, failed to properly secure the weapon and did not have the safety engaged.
As a result of the incident, the city filed complaints against The VIG, leading to the bar incurring over $83,000 in legal fees to defend its liquor license in administrative proceedings. In addition to financial losses, the bar also suffered damage to its reputation, resulting in lost sales and employee resignations. To prevent future incidents, The VIG has invested in metal detectors and hired armed security.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, no criminal charges have been filed in connection with the accidental discharge. The Cook County Record was the first to report on the lawsuit filed by The VIG against Michael Davis.
