A teacher in Virginia, Abby Zwerner, recounted the harrowing experience of being shot by a 6-year-old student in her classroom back in 2023. She testified that in that moment, she believed she had passed away.

Zwerner is currently involved in a $40 million lawsuit against a former assistant principal who allegedly ignored warnings about the student possessing a gun.

After sustaining injuries to her hand and chest, Zwerner spent an extensive amount of time in the hospital and underwent multiple surgeries. She has since pursued a career as a licensed cosmetologist and has decided not to return to teaching.

During her testimony, Zwerner described the moment of the shooting as surreal, with her initially believing she was transitioning to the afterlife before realizing she was injured and receiving medical attention from her colleagues.

The incident raised questions about how such a young child was able to access a firearm and commit such a violent act, sparking concerns and discussions nationwide.

Despite the trauma she experienced, Zwerner managed to evacuate her students from the classroom before collapsing in the school office. She continues to struggle with limited function in her left hand due to the lingering effects of the shooting.

The former assistant principal, Ebony Parker, is the sole defendant in the legal case, facing accusations of neglecting to address warnings about the student carrying a gun on school premises.

Parker is also set to stand trial separately on eight counts of felony child neglect.

Additionally, the student’s mother has been sentenced to prison for felony child neglect and federal weapons charges after her son admitted to accessing the gun from her purse.

The tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of gun safety and the need for stringent measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

As Zwerner continues to recover from the physical and emotional scars of the shooting, the legal proceedings aim to hold accountable those responsible for the lapses that led to the traumatic incident.
