Tragedy struck on Sunday afternoon when a driver evading police crashed, resulting in one fatality and two critically injured individuals. Inspector Peter Raynes of Tāmaki Makaurau Police reported that a car was seen speeding on Great South Road in Penrose, Auckland, prompting a police vehicle to signal for it to pull over. The driver ignored the signal and fled, causing a collision with two other vehicles. The driver of the fleeing vehicle was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Sadly, one person from one of the other vehicles lost their life at the scene, while another suffered critical injuries. A third individual was in moderate condition. The Serious Crash Unit is currently investigating the incident, leading to the road closure. A ‘Critical Incident Investigation’ has been initiated to uncover the circumstances surrounding the crash, with a focus on supporting those impacted. The Independent Police Conduct Authority has also been notified of the incident.
