Online health care reviews tank following COVID pandemic

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on health care facilities has been significant, especially in terms of online reviews. A recent analysis conducted by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania revealed that the number of positive reviews on platforms like Yelp has decreased dramatically since the start of the pandemic. In fact, more than half of the reviews are now negative, indicating a major shift in public perception.

The study, published in JAMA Network Open, emphasized the importance of online reviews in understanding the patient experience. Lead author Neil Sehgal explained that these reviews offer valuable insights that traditional metrics may overlook, allowing hospitals to address patient concerns in real-time.

By analyzing Yelp reviews from 2014 to 2023, the researchers observed a significant drop in positive reviews following the onset of the pandemic. The most common themes that emerged from the reviews were related to insurance and billing issues, customer service, staff behavior, and facility cleanliness.

Interestingly, the study also highlighted disparities in online reviews based on geographic and ethnic factors. Health care facilities in rural areas and neighborhoods with higher proportions of Black or white residents were more likely to receive negative reviews post-COVID. Reviews in areas with higher Hispanic populations also saw declines in positive ratings, albeit less pronounced.

The researchers identified correlations between ethnicity and the most mentioned complaints in reviews. Facilities in areas with higher Black or Hispanic populations often faced criticisms regarding insurance and billing issues, while those in predominantly white areas were more likely to receive complaints about wait times.

Moving forward, the researchers aim to delve deeper into the content of reviews to better understand how attitudes and opinions vary across different demographic groups. This information can help health care professionals tailor their services to meet the specific needs and concerns of diverse communities.

Overall, the study sheds light on the evolving landscape of health care reviews in the wake of the pandemic and underscores the importance of addressing patient feedback to improve the quality of care. As health care facilities navigate these changes, understanding and responding to online reviews will be crucial in maintaining patient satisfaction and trust.
