The Lady T, a nod to former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, is currently held in Boulogne-Sur-Mer.

The beleaguered British Prime Minister is facing intense scrutiny over his recently negotiated ‘Brexit Reset’ agreement with the European Union, which critics argue has effectively sacrificed the UK’s fishing industry. By granting EU vessels unrestricted access to British waters for the next 12 years, the deal has raised eyebrows and ire among local fishermen.

The situation escalated dramatically when a British trawler was detained by French authorities on May 24, allegedly for operating without the necessary licensing in the English Channel.

Daily Mail reported:

“The Lady T, based in Eastbourne, East Sussex, was intercepted in Boulogne-Sur-Mer on Saturday, facing the threat of confiscation. The vessel was caught by the French Navy ship Pluvier on Thursday, with its skipper now facing charges for fishing for whelks without a license.”

This incident follows closely on the heels of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s contentious agreement with the EU regarding fishing rights, which many view as disproportionately advantageous to French fishermen.

The Pluvier, designated as a ‘public service patrol vessel’ by the French Navy, was conducting inspections within the French Exclusive Economic Zone when it encountered the British fishing vessel.

According to a spokesperson from the French Maritime Authority: “During this operation, which was part of the State’s maritime enforcement, a British fishing vessel was inspected by sailors from the Navy patrol vessel while fishing without a license in French waters. As the offence was confirmed, the fishing vessel was redirected to the port of Boulogne-Sur-Mer for prosecution proceedings, following directives from the Delegate for the Sea and Coastline, who acts on behalf of the Regional Prefect responsible for fisheries oversight.”

The Lady T is now prohibited from leaving the port until further notice.

“One skipper from Dover described the situation as ‘outrageous’. Speaking to GB News, he lamented, ‘This is typical of the French. Instead of focusing on halting the daily illegal crossings by migrants in the Channel, they are choosing to target British fishermen.’”

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has voiced that the recently inked 12-year deal for European fishing access spells doom for the British fishing sector.
