A recent survey conducted by GlobalData has shed light on the significant role that monthly payment options play in the realm of insurance coverage, especially in personal lines. This is particularly crucial as many households continue to face financial pressures. The survey revealed that consumers may be inclined to reduce or cancel their insurance coverage if flexible payment methods are not made available to them. This underscores the importance of offering instalment options to support insurance affordability.

According to GlobalData’s 2025 UK Insurance Consumer Survey, a substantial number of motor insurance customers (36.4%) and household insurance customers (38.5%) opt to pay for their policies on a monthly basis. This indicates that a significant portion of policyholders prefer to spread out their insurance costs over the course of a year rather than making a single lump-sum payment. For many consumers, monthly instalments make insurance more accessible and easier to manage alongside other household expenses.

Recent research from Premium Credit revealed that a considerable percentage of respondents would consider drastic measures if they were unable to spread the cost of their insurance. For instance, 22% stated that they would sell their car if they could not pay for motor insurance monthly, while 16% indicated that they would cease purchasing home buildings or contents insurance altogether. While paying annually may be more cost-effective in the long run, the upfront expense can be prohibitive for many households, especially in light of rising inflation and insurance premiums. Monthly payment plans not only serve as a financing tool but also as a means of ensuring continued access to essential protection.

For insurers, these findings underscore the importance of striking a balance between affordability and profitability when designing payment options. While offering instalment plans may increase administrative costs and regulatory considerations, they can also help in customer retention and mitigating the risk of underinsurance. Insurers that can provide flexible and transparent payment solutions, while effectively communicating the value of their coverage, are likely to be better positioned to retain customers and uphold protection levels in the personal lines insurance market.

In conclusion, the availability of monthly payment options is crucial in maintaining insurance coverage for many consumers. Insurers must carefully consider the implications of not offering flexible payment methods, as this could lead to a higher likelihood of customers reducing their coverage or opting for lower levels of protection. By prioritizing affordability and customer retention, insurers can ensure that their policyholders have access to the necessary protection they need.
