Netflix has recently unveiled its latest project, a four-part horror drama miniseries titled “My Sad Dead” (“Mis muertos tristes”), directed by the renowned Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín. The series is a co-production between Larraín’s Chilean label Fabula and Argentina’s K&S Films, the producers behind Netflix’s hit show “The Eternaut.”

Based on the short story of the same name by Argentine author Mariana Enríquez, “My Sad Dead” is scheduled to commence filming at the end of June. The production will take place in Buenos Aires for exterior shots and in Santiago, Chile for interior scenes.

The miniseries is described as a psychological and supernatural horror story that delves into societal trauma. Drawing inspiration not only from Enríquez’s titular story but also incorporating characters and themes from her other works such as “Julie”, “A Sunny Place for Shady People”, and “Back When We Talked to the Dead.” The screenplay was adapted by Enríquez herself, along with celebrated Chilean writer Guillermo Calderón, Anastasia Ayazi, and Larraín.

The cast of “My Sad Dead” features top Argentine actors including Mercedes Morán, Dolores Fonzi, Alejandra Flechner, Carlos Portaluppi, Germán de Silva, Luz Jiménez, and newcomer Carolina Sánchez Álvarez in her debut role.

The official synopsis of the series reads: “Ema, a 60-year-old doctor, can see and hear the dead. She calls them ‘presences’ and has lived her entire life avoiding letting this gift connect her with the suffering of others. But when her niece Julie, a disturbed young woman who can also communicate with the dead in a much more intense and sexual manner, arrives at her house, Ema is forced to get involved. What begins as a family reunion turns into a disturbing chain of events that alters the balance between the world of the living and the dead, infecting an entire neighborhood with voices from beyond. As the borders between life, death, and desire blur, Ema will have to confront her past, her daughter, and the ghosts she never let go.”

Director Pablo Larraín expressed his enthusiasm for the project, praising Enríquez’s writing as visual, brilliant, and dangerous. He expressed gratitude to Netflix for the opportunity to collaborate with a team of talented individuals who will bring the miniseries to life.

Enríquez herself shared her excitement about the adaptation, stating her appreciation for Larraín and Fabula for adapting her stories into a miniseries. She expressed high expectations for this interpretation of “My Sad Dead” and was thrilled about the platform Netflix providing a wide-reaching audience for the series.

Francisco Ramos, VP of Netflix Latin American Content, highlighted the platform’s dedication to showcasing the best of Argentine storytelling and praised the collaboration with Larraín on this new project.

“My Sad Dead” is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín, Pablo Larraín, and Ángela Poblete, with executive production by Álvaro Cabello and Cristián Donoso. The series boasts a talented team including Sergio Armstrong (cinematography), Rodrigo Bazaes (production design), Waldo Salgado (assistant director), and Alejandro Wise (production director).

With a stellar cast, a compelling storyline, and a talented crew behind the scenes, “My Sad Dead” promises to be a chilling and thought-provoking addition to the horror genre. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting new miniseries coming soon to Netflix.
