The victim, Sharleen Smith, aged 64, was described by the police as a cherished mother, grandmother, and sister from Rotorua.
Smith’s remains were located at a property on Taihape Rd in Omahu, near Hastings, on February 3.
A 47-year-old man was taken into custody today and is facing charges of murder and injuring with intent. He is scheduled to appear in the Napier District Court tomorrow.
Additionally, a 45-year-old man was arrested yesterday and charged with being an accessory after the fact to a culpable homicide.
He made a court appearance today and has been remanded to reappear in Napier on March 4. In addition to the charges related to Smith’s case, he also faces three unrelated domestic-related charges.
Law enforcement had previously identified a white 2005 Mazda 3 sports hatchback as a vehicle of interest in the investigation.
Detective Inspector Martin James expressed hope that the recent arrests would provide some comfort to Smith’s family and the wider community.
James commended the diligent efforts of the investigative team and community members who assisted by providing valuable information, including CCTV footage.
“Their dedication in reviewing video footage and promptly notifying the authorities has greatly contributed to the swift resolution of this case.”
