Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan praised Abhishek Sharma for his exceptional performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 Group 1 match against Zimbabwe. The game took place on Thursday, February 26, in Chennai.

India, batting first, put up a formidable total of 256/4, with Abhishek leading the charge with a brisk 55 off 30 balls, including four fours and four sixes. Zimbabwe, in response, could only manage 184/6, falling short by 72 runs.

In a post-match YouTube video, Pathan commended Abhishek’s innings, noting that although his fifty off 26 balls was the second slowest of his career, it was a significant positive for the team. Pathan highlighted Abhishek’s conscious effort to score most of his runs straight down the ground, in the V.

Abhishek’s shift in approach to play straighter resulted in about 68 percent of his runs coming in the V, a departure from his usual scoring areas square of the wicket. This adjustment allowed him to capitalize on fuller deliveries and slower balls, leading to his success in the match.

In five games so far, Abhishek has accumulated 70 runs from five innings at an average of 14.00 with a strike rate of 140.00.

India’s strategic change in the lineup for the Zimbabwe game, which saw Sanju Samson opening with Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan moving to No. 3, proved to be beneficial. The opening partnership between Sanju and Abhishek added 48 runs off just 22 balls, marking India’s highest opening stand in the tournament.

Pathan analyzed the move, highlighting the right-hand and left-hand combination at the top and the positive impact it had on the team’s performance, especially in the powerplay overs. Sanju’s quickfire 24 off 15 balls set the tone for India’s innings, providing the start they were looking for.

The shift in the opening pair and the subsequent strong partnership between Sanju and Abhishek showcased a much-needed improvement in India’s performance, particularly in the powerplay overs.

India will now gear up for their final Super 8 must-win encounter against West Indies on Sunday, March 1, in Kolkata.

Overall, Pathan’s analysis of Abhishek Sharma’s innings and India’s strategic changes in the lineup shed light on the team’s progress and potential for success in the T20 World Cup. As the tournament progresses, India will look to build on these positives and continue their winning momentum.
