Palmeiras defender Murilo, who had expressed his desire to emulate Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration in front of Lionel Messi, suffered an injury during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw in the FIFA Club World Cup. Despite the setback, the MLS side managed to secure a spot in the knockout stage of the tournament after finishing second in the group stage, just behind Palmeiras with five points.
Prior to the clash between Palmeiras and Inter Miami, Murilo had spoken to TyC Sports about his intentions to mimic Ronaldo’s celebration if he scored against Messi’s team. In a statement via Bolavip, Murilo stated, “I’m Team CR7. I think he’s very complete. I think his ego is also something good, something positive. (…) Yes, yes, I’ll do it [celebrate like Ronaldo if he scores]. Yes.”
However, fate had other plans as Murilo was forced off the field due to an injury in the 16th minute of the match. The defender sustained the injury just before Tadeo Allende scored the opening goal for Inter Miami, making it impossible for him to continue playing. Bruno Fuchs was brought on as a replacement for Murilo.
Following the 2-2 draw, both Palmeiras and Inter Miami advanced to the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup. Messi’s side is now set to face his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), in the next stage on June 29.
In a separate event earlier this month, Lionel Messi showcased a stellar performance as Inter Miami defeated Porto 2-1 in the FIFA Club World Cup. Messi’s standout moment came in the form of a brilliant free-kick goal in the 54th minute, securing the Herons’ victory in the group stages. During a post-match press conference with DS Sports, Messi was asked about his long-standing rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentine legend expressed his respect and admiration for Ronaldo’s career and emphasized the competitive spirit they shared on the field.
The rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has been a defining feature of football over the past two decades. Despite their departure from European football, both players continue to excel in their respective clubs, Al-Nassr and Inter Miami. Ronaldo recently led Portugal to victory in the UEFA Nations League, while Messi has been instrumental in guiding Inter Miami through the Club World Cup.
As pundits and fans debate over who is the superior player, Messi and Ronaldo’s enduring legacy in the sport remains unquestionable. Their professionalism and mutual respect off the field have further solidified their status as two of the greatest footballers of all time.
