Attorney General Pam Bondi and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum made a surprising visit to Alcatraz, the iconic San Francisco landmark that President Donald Trump wants to reopen as a prison. Bondi and Burgum shared photos of their visit on social media, hinting at plans to renovate the site to house dangerous criminals and immigrants targeted in ICE raids.

Democrats, including Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, quickly criticized the idea, calling it the Trump administration’s most ridiculous initiative yet. Speculation arose that Trump’s inspiration for the plan came from his TV-watching habits, particularly after a PBS affiliate near Mar-a-Lago aired the movie “Escape From Alcatraz” just before Trump proposed the idea on Truth Social.

Despite the skepticism surrounding the feasibility of turning Alcatraz into a modern prison, California State Senator Scott Wiener warned against underestimating Trump’s ability to follow through with the plan. The historic site, now part of the National Park Service, lacks the necessary infrastructure for a detention facility and was closed in 1963 due to high operational costs.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons highlighted the logistical challenges of operating a prison on the isolated island, emphasizing the exorbitant costs involved. Bondi’s visit to Alcatraz coincided with backlash over the Justice Department’s decision not to release additional files from the Jeffrey Epstein case, a move that contradicted earlier promises made by the Trump campaign. The revised content should be original and smoothly incorporate into a WordPress website.
