Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime Guttenberg was a victim of the 2018 Parkland massacre in Florida, expressed his shock and dismay after hearing from numerous individuals who had experienced both the Parkland shooting and the recent tragedy at Florida State University. In an interview with MSNBC’s JosĂ© DĂaz-Balart, Guttenberg stated that he spent the afternoon feeling shaken by the news.

He mentioned that many former students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history occurred in 2018, were present during the FSU shooting. Guttenberg, who has been an anti-gun-violence activist since his daughter’s death, highlighted the fact that students at other universities, such as Michigan State, have also been survivors of multiple school shootings.

Guttenberg shared that his daughter would have been graduating from college this year if she were still alive, and he noted that several of her friends attend FSU, some of whom were at the student union during the shooting. Expressing his frustration with the lack of action on gun violence, Guttenberg criticized former President Donald Trump for his response to the shootings and for undoing progress made on gun control during President Joe Biden’s tenure.

He specifically called out Trump for shuttering the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and rolling back actions on gun control implemented by Biden. Guttenberg condemned Trump’s inaction and expressed his disappointment at the lack of meaningful change to address gun violence.
