Man on Parole for Sexual Assault Charged in 2024 Chicago Shootout

A man on parole for sexually assaulting a teenager has been charged in connection with a 2024 shootout on Chicago’s West Side, where one of his bullets nearly struck a 7-year-old child, prosecutors said. Although he was identified almost immediately after the incident, no charges were filed until now.

Elliott Cordova, 36, was less than four months into his parole when he allegedly exchanged gunfire with someone in a car around 1 p.m. on March 9, 2024, in the 1900 block of North LaCrosse. Prosecutors said the incident was caught on multiple surveillance cameras.

According to a detention petition, Cordova exchanged words with the occupants of a passing vehicle before a rear passenger shot him several times. Cordova allegedly returned fire, discharging five rounds toward the vehicle. One of his bullets hit a parked car that was occupied by two people, including a 7-year-old boy, prosecutors said. No one was injured.

Cordova showed up at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment after the shooting. Investigators identified him as a suspect shortly after the incident, but prosecutors did not file charges until this month.

He is now charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm toward a vehicle and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Judge Antara Rivera ordered him detained, citing his decision to flee the scene and his failure to call 911.

Due to the new allegations, Cordova has been returned to prison on a parole violation. He was 17 when he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl, leading to an eight-year sentence, according to the Illinois Sex Offender Registry. He was released on parole in November 2023.
