A recent incident outside Holy Name Cathedral has left the community shocked, as an 18-year-old man, Raleigh Ford, has been charged with attempted carjacking and assault on a Catholic priest. This alarming event occurred just two days after Ford was released on parole for an armed robbery conviction, raising concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of the justice system.
According to Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Sorrentino, the priest had parked his 2015 Toyota RAV4 in front of the cathedral while he went to check the mail and have lunch with some nuns. Upon his return, he found Ford inside his vehicle, attempting to steal it. A struggle ensued, during which Ford allegedly punched the priest and tried to push him out of the car. Fortunately, the priest was able to remove the keys from the ignition, thwarting Ford’s plan and forcing him to flee the scene.
Surveillance cameras at the cathedral captured the entire incident, leading to Ford’s identification by three Chicago police officers who had previous encounters with him. Just five days later, Ford was allegedly involved in another incident, this time an aggravated assault involving a 2011 Porsche Cayenne. When confronted by the owner, Ford reportedly fled on foot and brandished a handgun, although no firearm was recovered upon his arrest.
Ford’s criminal history includes multiple adjudications, including armed robbery and stolen motor vehicle cases. Despite his denial of the charges, Assistant Public Defender Yasmeen Yousif highlighted Ford’s role as the primary caretaker for his disabled brother and mother, who recently underwent surgery. Additionally, Ford is actively seeking employment, with an upcoming interview at Amazon.
During Ford’s detention hearing, Judge Luciano Panici Jr. expressed grave concern about Ford’s behavior, labeling him a “menace to the community.” As a result, the state’s detention petition was granted, ensuring that Ford remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
This disturbing incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the justice system in addressing repeat offenders and safeguarding public safety. The community is left grappling with the implications of such brazen acts of violence and the need for effective intervention to prevent future incidents.
