PayPal has recently unveiled a groundbreaking initiative called PayPal World, in collaboration with global wallet companies, aimed at simplifying cross-border commerce. This innovative platform will enable users to make payments using their local wallets and payment systems, bridging the gap between different payment ecosystems.
The launch partners for PayPal World include India’s NPCI International Payments Limited, known for operating the popular mobile payments framework UPI (Unified Payment Interface), and China’s Tenpay Global, Tencent’s payment arm that manages the Weixin (WeChat) payment ecosystem in the country. Additionally, PayPal and Venmo are also part of this strategic partnership.
In a move to expand its reach, PayPal has signed a memorandum of understanding with Latin America’s Mercado Pago, a leading fintech company facilitating card and mobile payments. Through these partnerships, PayPal aims to connect with over two billion users worldwide, offering them a seamless payment experience.
Alex Chriss, the President and CEO of PayPal, expressed his enthusiasm for the launch of PayPal World, describing it as a revolutionary payments ecosystem that brings together major payment systems and digital wallets on a unified platform. This initiative is expected to simplify the complexities of cross-border transactions, benefiting consumers and businesses globally.
With PayPal World, users of PayPal and Venmo will have the ability to send money to anyone worldwide, even if they do not have a PayPal account. For instance, travelers in China can use PayPal on the Weixin payment network to make local transactions, while customers in India can pay for purchases on U.S. websites using their UPI wallet through PayPal.
The total user base and transaction volume of these wallet systems are significant. For example, Mercado Pago reported a total payment volume of $58.3 billion in the first quarter of 2025, while UPI transactions in India exceeded $238 billion in June alone, as per NPCI data. Tenpay Global is also focused on enhancing remittance services and facilitating cross-border peer-to-peer payments.
Tenpay Global’s CEO, Wenhui Yang, highlighted the collaboration with PayPal World, emphasizing the support for PayPal and Venmo users to make payments by scanning Weixin Pay QR codes in China. This partnership will also extend to remittances, further enhancing global digital wallet transactions in the region.
PayPal World is scheduled to launch this fall with its esteemed partners, paving the way for enhanced payment solutions. In 2026, Venmo users will have the opportunity to pay for online and offline purchases at merchants supporting PayPal’s payment services, further expanding the reach and convenience of PayPal World.
