NEW YORK (AP) — On Sunday evening, six individuals suffered injuries after a stabbing incident occurred inside New York’s Penn Station, officials reported. This event took place just a day before thousands of fans are anticipated to converge on nearby Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
The attack, which took place around 7 p.m., led to the arrest of a suspect at one of the country’s busiest transit centers. Located beneath Madison Square Garden, the expansive rail hub accommodates Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit, and New York City subway lines, serving hundreds of thousands of commuters and travelers daily.
According to the city’s fire department, paramedics treated one victim with serious injuries, two with moderate injuries, and two with minor injuries. All five were transported to Bellevue Hospital. Another individual, whose condition was not immediately available, was taken to a different hospital.
Authorities have not yet disclosed what provoked the stabbing or whether the victims were specifically targeted.
By late Sunday, the chaos had subsided, and Penn Station returned to its usual atmosphere. Travelers moved past a roped-off area near Tracks 5 and 6, where remnants of the incident, such as medical gloves, discarded bandages, and traces of blood, were still visible on the floor.
The stabbing occurred as New York geared up for a major sports event. Monday night’s face-off between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs marks the first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden since 1999, expected to draw large crowds to the venue.
President Donald Trump has announced he plans to attend the nationally televised game, leading to heightened security measures by the Secret Service, New York Police Department, and other agencies around Madison Square Garden and its vicinity. Authorities have not confirmed if the stabbing will alter security plans for the event.
Amtrak police reported they are investigating the stabbing and have detained a suspect. The suspect’s identity and any potential charges have not been disclosed at this time.
