The Importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in National Security

By Casey Harper (The Center Square)

The U.S. Department of Defense is facing criticism for its refusal to disclose information regarding the impact of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) spending on national security. The Center to Advance Security in America filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request seeking to understand the real effects of DEI funding, which Congress allocated $86.5 million for in fiscal year 2023.

James Fitzpatrick, a veteran leading CASA, revealed that despite acknowledging receipt of the FOIA request, the DOD has failed to release any documents over 100 days later. The request aims to uncover how a recent hiring freeze on DEI positions will affect national security.

The FOIA emphasizes the need to evaluate the impact of DEI initiatives on advancing national security efforts. With the DOD highlighting diversity as a crucial strength in the military, the lack of transparency regarding DEI spending raises concerns about its implications on national security.

The recent National Defense Authorization Act introduced a hiring freeze on new DEI positions while undergoing a review by the Government Accountability Office. CASA has taken legal action against the DOD to obtain the necessary information.

DOD officials stress the significance of diversity in national defense, but the lack of transparency regarding DEI spending has sparked controversy. DEI spending encompasses well-paid hires, training programs on gender pronouns and white privilege, and initiatives to diversify the military workforce.

The DOD’s strategic plan for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility underscores the importance of leveraging diversity to enhance national security. By attracting and retaining diverse talent, the DOD aims to outthink, outmaneuver, and outfight adversaries to maintain military superiority.

Despite requests for comments, the DOD did not respond in time for publication. The ongoing debate surrounding DEI spending highlights the need for transparency and accountability in national security initiatives.
