Wānaka Library is now offering English classes to support the growing migrant community in the area. The language barrier can be a significant challenge for immigrants relocating to New Zealand, and the library, in collaboration with the council’s Welcoming Communities initiative, is working to address this issue by providing social English as a second language (ESL) classes.

After the success of two blocks of four-week classes last year, which brought together up to 15 individuals from the immigrant community, Wānaka librarians Rebekah Kennedy and Paula Mitchell were delighted to receive funding to continue the program. The classes, led by experienced ESL teacher Neil Scott, cater to learners with varying levels of English proficiency and also serve as a social space for newcomers to connect with others in a similar situation.

The classes have already garnered interest from 14 registered participants, with more expected to join as word spreads in the community. The program, which will run every Monday from July 14, may expand to include additional classes throughout the week to accommodate the growing demand.

Ms. Mitchell emphasized the importance of supporting the migrant community, noting that their contributions are essential to the functioning of the town. In addition to the in-person classes, Wānaka Library also offers online ESL courses and a selection of international books in various languages for public access.

Overall, the English classes at Wānaka Library serve as a valuable resource for immigrants seeking to improve their language skills and connect with others in the community, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
