The toddler brother of a 7-month-old girl who was killed by a stray bullet in Brooklyn was also struck by the same bullet, which has led police to announce forthcoming murder charges against a person of interest in the case.
Amuri Greene, 21, is anticipated to face charges related to the Wednesday afternoon incident where Kaori Patterson was fatally shot, and her 2-year-old brother sustained a back wound, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Greene, who has no prior criminal record but is suspected in recent robberies, was identified as a person of interest after arriving at a local hospital with a leg injury shortly following the shooting.
Authorities are exploring whether Kaori’s father was the intended target, linked to an ongoing conflict between two Brooklyn housing projects, sources indicated.
The tragic event unfolded at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday when Lianna Charles-Moore, 20, was walking with her two children in a double stroller near Humboldt and Moore streets in Williamsburg. Shots were fired, according to police and various sources.
In a state of panic, Charles-Moore sought refuge in a nearby bodega. It was there she noticed her daughter Kaori covered in blood, prompting her to scream in terrorāa moment captured on the store’s security footage.
Kaori was immediately taken to Woodhall Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:46 p.m.
āWe thought it was fireworks, but my son jumped out of the stroller and I picked him up and carried him,ā Charles-Moore recounted to The Post on Wednesday. āI was hugging him and then when I looked to my left, my daughter was just there, lying there. She was shot in the head. She was just bleeding. It was just too much.ā
According to sources, the bullet that killed Kaori also grazed her brother’s back.
Surveillance footage released by the police captured the suspects at the scene, where the passenger fired shots from the back of a moped while the driver sped away.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, Commissioner Tisch noted that the suspects crashed their moped head-on into a car two blocks from the shooting, resulting in Greene’s hospitalization. He was subsequently identified as a person of interest and detained.
Greene is currently being questioned concerning an unrelated alleged domestic violence incident.
The driver of the moped is now the focus of an extensive NYPD manhunt, Tisch informed reporters.
Karoiās family shared that the young child had recently learned to say āmama.ā
According to Tisch, Kaori and her mother were among several adults and children on a busy sidewalk when the suspect fired at least two shots.
The shooting is believed to be gang-related, though further details were not provided.
Law enforcement sources stated that the baby was not thought to be the intended target.
