In a significant operation, Baldwin Park police apprehended four suspects in Norwalk, uncovering more than $500,000 worth of stolen catalytic converters. This operation concluded a months-long investigation initiated due to a sharp increase in such thefts throughout Los Angeles.

According to KTLA, detectives noted that nearby cities have also experienced a “similar and significant rise in catalytic converter thefts,” as reported by the department.

The individuals arrested included three men and one woman, as depicted in photos released by the police department.

A catalytic converter is a device in car exhaust systems that converts harmful pollutants into less harmful emissions. These converters, valued for the precious metals they contain, are frequently targeted for theft because they are relatively easy to remove and sell.

Utilizing combined intelligence and resources from local sheriff’s and police departments, investigators identified two key locations: a South Los Angeles site where stolen catalytic converters were being purchased, and a secondary storage facility in Norwalk. Police seized approximately 1,800 suspected stolen converters, with each replacement typically costing victims between $1,500 and $2,000.

“This investigation remains active, and additional arrests are anticipated,” stated the police.
