His family announced his death in a statement on Saturday.
Costelloe started his own label, Paul Costelloe Collections, in 1983 and was appointed as Diana’s personal designer shortly after. Their collaboration continued until her tragic death in 1997.
Costelloe, who oversaw the creation of all his collections from his studio in central London, showcased his designs at London Fashion Week’s first edition in 1984 and most recently presented his spring-summer creations this year.
The 80-year-old peacefully passed away in London after a brief illness, surrounded by his wife and seven children, according to the family.
Born in Dublin in 1945, Costelloe initially trained there before pursuing further education in Paris at the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. He later worked as a designer in Milan for the luxury department store La Rinascente before establishing his own label in New York and eventually settling in London.
Costelloe’s diverse collections include womenswear, menswear, bags, homeware, and jewellery.
“Paul had an extraordinary career as a prominent figure in Irish, UK, and international fashion and business for many years. He achieved great success through his exceptional talent, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence,” stated Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris.
“His legacy is truly an exceptional Irish success story.”
