Phil Collins’ Health Concerns Addressed by Representative
Recent reports about the health of Phil Collins have been downplayed by his representative, who spoke out to reassure fans that there is no cause for alarm. The Genesis drummer, aged 74, is currently hospitalized for knee surgery, according to a spokesperson who responded to concerns that arose on social media following the deaths of other celebrities such as Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Ozzy Osbourne, and Hulk Hogan.
Collins, who has been largely out of the public eye since his final performances with Genesis in 2022, had to perform seated and was replaced on drums by his son, Nic Collins, due to lingering effects of a spinal injury from 2007. Additionally, Collins has been managing type 2 diabetes.
In a candid interview with MOJO Magazine in February, Collins opened up about his private health battles in recent years, revealing that he has been “very sick.” This has affected his desire to create new music, as he admitted that he no longer feels the same hunger for it.
Collins underwent spinal surgery in 2009 following an injury sustained during Genesis’ reunion tour in 2007. Despite facing challenges with numbness in his fingers and the inability to grip drumsticks, he underwent a second spinal procedure in 2015. This allowed him to regain some mobility but limited him to drumming with only his right hand.
The musician was able to reunite with Genesis bandmates Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks for their Last Domino farewell tour, which concluded in 2022. However, Collins expressed doubts in a 2024 documentary, Phil Collins: Drummer First, about his ability to continue drumming regularly given his health concerns.
Reflecting on his extensive career, which began at the age of 3 when he started drumming, Collins joined Genesis in 1970 and later transitioned to become the band’s frontman after Peter Gabriel’s departure in 1975. Genesis went on to sell an estimated 150 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Collins himself was recognized in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999.
It is clear that Phil Collins has faced numerous health challenges throughout his career, but his resilience and determination have allowed him to continue making music and performing for his fans. As he focuses on his recovery from knee surgery, we can only hope for his swift return to health and potentially, to the music scene once again.
