The tragic incident of the Uber driver, Olatunji W. Bolaji, being murdered outside a hookah lounge in Philadelphia has shocked the community. The disturbing security footage captured the moment when Bolaji was targeted by gunmen while picking up a 22-year-old passenger outside the Byblos Hookah Bar in downtown Philadelphia.

The footage shows Bolaji’s black Chevy Suburban parked outside the lounge as the passenger hugged a woman before two men suddenly appeared from a Jeep Grand Cherokee with Massachusetts plates. The suspects rushed towards the passenger with guns drawn, causing the woman to flee for safety. The passenger quickly jumped into the SUV as the gunmen surrounded the vehicle.

One of the suspects then fired shots into the vehicle, hitting Bolaji in the head and the passenger in the arm, leg, and abdomen. Despite being shot, Bolaji managed to drive away but tragically crashed into a light pole a block away, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was taken to Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition.

Authorities revealed that there was a physical altercation between the suspects and the passenger before Bolaji arrived to pick him up. The suspects remain unidentified and at large, with a $20,000 reward being offered for information leading to their arrest and conviction.

Neighbors described Bolaji as a hard-working and friendly man from a respectful family. He leaves behind a son and a partner, who are devastated by his senseless murder. Uber expressed condolences to Bolaji’s family and offered support to the police in their efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The incident adds to the rising violence in Philadelphia, with 58 homicides reported since the beginning of 2025 and 446 shooting incidents resulting in 239 victims as of April 17. In 2024, there were a total of 635 shootings and 296 victims in the city, highlighting the concerning trend of violence in the community.

The loss of Bolaji has deeply impacted his loved ones and the wider community, underscoring the need for increased efforts to address and prevent such senseless acts of violence. The city mourns the loss of a dedicated Uber driver who was simply doing his job when his life was tragically cut short.
