A prominent piano teacher to Hollywood stars, John Kaleel, has been sentenced to nine years and four months in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing a child. The jury found Kaleel guilty of horrific sex crimes against a longtime student, starting when the boy was just 13 years old. This once-respected keyboard instructor attempted to flee the country to Australia on the same day he was convicted.

Authorities in Australia captured Kaleel, and he was extradited back to Los Angeles in January at the request of the U.S. government. The U.S. Marshals Service transported him back to the United States, where he was taken into custody. District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated, “He has now learned the hard way that you can run, but you cannot hide.”

Kaleel, who had been a piano teacher in West Hollywood for over two decades, boasted a lavish lifestyle on social media, showcasing photos of himself by the pool and flexing in front of the Sydney Opera House. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Victims Bureau initiated an investigation into allegations against him in 2015 after a student reported inappropriate behavior by the music teacher over the years.

According to court documents, the victim revealed that Kaleel had asked him to measure his penis at the age of 12 and later engaged in inappropriate activities over FaceTime. When the boy turned 15, Kaleel invited him over, where they smoked marijuana and engaged in oral sex. Despite pleading no contest to the sex abuse charges in 2016, Kaleel faced a tough sentence as the district attorney’s office opted to retry his case.

In October, Kaleel was convicted of multiple felony counts of lewd acts upon a child aged 14 or 15, as well as one felony count of lewd act upon a child under 14. The district attorney expressed solidarity with the victim who had endured years of abuse from someone he trusted.

The case of John Kaleel serves as a stark reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators of sexual abuse accountable for their actions. The justice system has ensured that Kaleel will face the consequences of his heinous crimes, providing some form of closure and justice for the victim.
