BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — James “Jimmy” Gracey, a college student from Illinois, was discovered dead after disappearing during a visit to Barcelona. Spanish regional police indicated on Friday that his death was likely accidental.

Gracey’s remains were located Thursday afternoon in the ocean near a beach, close to where he was last observed outside a Barcelona nightclub with friends early Tuesday morning.

A representative from Catalonia’s regional police in Barcelona informed The Associated Press that indications suggest the student from the University of Alabama died accidentally. An autopsy is to follow.

Gracey, aged 20, was last seen at approximately 3 a.m. on Tuesday outside the Shoko nightclub. He did not return to the accommodation he shared with friends, as noted by family members residing in Elmhurst, a suburb located around 19 miles (31 kilometers) west of Chicago. Authorities later retrieved his mobile phone.

In a public statement, the Gracey family requested prayers and privacy.

“Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy’s body has been recovered in Barcelona. Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss,” the statement expressed.

Barcelona, a favored destination for tourists, attracts millions of international visitors annually. While generally considered safe, especially in comparison to large U.S. cities, tourists’ primary concern often involves pickpockets.

The city’s Mediterranean beaches, located within walking distance of the bustling city center, are a major attraction, especially for young travelers. The area where Gracey was last seen is a beach stretch with various restaurants and nightclubs popular among both locals and tourists.

Before police confirmed his death, Gracey’s aunt described him to the AP as “just a great kid, a good Catholic boy from the Midwest.”

The University of Alabama released a statement expressing their sorrow at the news of Jimmy Gracey’s death.

“Jimmy’s loss is deeply felt across our campus. Our condolences are with the Gracey family during this devastating time,” the statement conveyed.

Naishadham reported from Madrid and O’Connor reported from Springfield, Illinois.
