The Leica M-A camera once owned by the late Pope Francis recently made headlines after selling at a European auction for a staggering $7.5 million, far exceeding its initial estimate. This particular model is now considered one of the most valuable Leica cameras ever sold, showcasing the enduring appeal of this iconic brand.

The auction was conducted by Leitz Photographica Auction, who announced their plans to sell the Pope’s camera for charity back in September. The proceeds from the sale will go towards various charitable causes, in line with Pope Francis’s dedication to helping those in need. The camera was originally gifted to the pontiff by Leica, featuring a personalized design that sets it apart from standard models.

The Leica M-A camera comes with a Noctilus-M 50 mm lens and boasts a distinctive serial number of 5000000, making it a coveted item for collectors. The camera’s white-painted top plate is engraved with Pope Francis’s motto “miserando atque eligendo” (meaning “by having mercy and choosing”), adding a personal touch to the design. Additionally, the flash cover is adorned with the keys of Peter, further emphasizing the connection to the Vatican.

Both the body and lens caps of the camera feature the Coat of Arms of the State of Vatican City, along with an etching of “AD MMXXIV,” signifying the year the camera was presented to the Pope in Roman numerals. These unique touches make this Leica M-A a truly special and valuable collector’s item.

While it remains unclear how extensively Pope Francis used the camera before his passing at the age of 88, his support for the arts was well-known. He believed in the power of art to bring beauty into the world, praising artists of all disciplines for their ability to illuminate life’s darkness with creativity and inspiration.

The record-breaking price achieved at auction reflects the high demand for rare and unique items with historical significance, making this Leica camera a truly remarkable piece of photographic history.
