The Mainland Pouākai have made a remarkable turnaround this season, currently sitting at the top of the table after missing out on the playoffs last year.

In a dominant performance, the Canterbury team secured a solid win over the Southern Hoiho with a final score of 88-66 in Christchurch. Haliegh Reinoehl led the charge with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Sharne Robati made a significant impact off the bench with 14 points, including four three-pointers.

Despite missing key players Zoe Richards and Samara Gallaher due to injury, the Hoiho team put up a strong fight with local players stepping up to fill the gaps. Aliyah Dunn and Tyler Mitchell delivered impressive performances, with Dunn securing 11 rebounds and Mitchell making valuable contributions on the court.

Ahlise Hurst showcased her skills with 18 points and five steals, while Samantha Bowman recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Reinoehl set the tone early for the Pouākai by scoring the first nine points of the game.

The Hoiho team fought back in the second quarter, led by Chelsea D’Angelo’s three-pointers and Natalie Chou’s scoring efforts. Despite their efforts, the Pouākai maintained their lead and finished the quarter ahead 24-22.

As the game progressed, the Pouākai tightened their defense and extended their lead with impressive plays from Robati and Hurst. Despite a strong offensive rebounding effort from the Hoiho, they struggled to convert these opportunities into points.

The Pouākai continued to dominate in the second half, building a significant lead and securing a comfortable win by the end of the game. The Hoiho will look to bounce back as they face the Northern Kāhu in their next match at the Edgar Centre.
