President Trump Signs Executive Order to Align Public Service Loan Forgiveness with Actual Public Service

Today, President Donald J. Trump took a step towards ensuring that taxpayer-funded student loan forgiveness is directed towards promoting actual public service. In a move to end the misuse of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, the President signed an Executive Order that will exclude organizations engaged in activities with a substantial illegal purpose from eligibility for loan forgiveness.

  • The Executive Order directs the Secretary of Education to revise the PSLF program to prevent taxpayer funds from subsidizing activities that promote illegal immigration, terrorism, child abuse, discrimination, and public disruptions.
  • By refocusing the PSLF program on encouraging Americans to enter essential public service roles, such as nursing, the Executive Order aims to protect national security and American values.

Addressing Prior Abuses of the Loan Forgiveness Program

President Trump’s administration has highlighted the abuse of the PSLF program by the prior administration, where organizations engaging in illegal activities were still eligible for loan forgiveness.

  • The PSLF program was originally intended to incentivize Americans to pursue critical public service jobs by forgiving student loans after 10 years of service and payments.
  • Under the previous administration, eligibility rules allowed individuals working for NGOs promoting illegal activities to benefit from taxpayer-funded loan forgiveness.
  • The misuse of the waiver process under the prior administration resulted in early forgiveness of loans for individuals who did not meet the program’s requirements.
  • President Trump’s Executive Order aims to correct these abuses by ensuring that only legitimate public servants benefit from the program.

Putting American Values First

President Trump’s actions are aimed at aligning taxpayer dollars with American values and preventing funding of radical agendas.

  • By signing the Executive Order, President Trump continues his commitment to halting taxpayer funding of radical agendas and ensuring that taxpayer dollars are used in a manner that reflects American values.

This Executive Order is part of a series of actions taken by President Trump to uphold American values, including terminating radical preferences in federal contracting, reinstating the Mexico City Policy, and ending radical indoctrination in K-12 education.
