Despite the ongoing federal government shutdown, President Trump is resolute in his commitment to ensure that military personnel receive their paychecks. He took to Truth Social to assert that he would utilize his commander-in-chief authority to secure payment for the men and women serving in the U.S. military.
In a pointed critique, Trump singled out Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as a principal figure responsible for the current deadlock, which has persisted after two funding measures failed to gain traction in the Senate.
As of October 1 at midnight, the government has entered a partial shutdown, marking the failure of various funding proposals which have been defeated in the Senate on seven occasions. Today denotes the eleventh day of what has been labeled a “Schumer Shutdown.”
According to Trump, instead of collaborating with Republicans to maintain funding through November, Schumer opted for a shutdown reportedly to prioritize healthcare for undocumented immigrants.
In his own words, Trump stated, “Chuck Schumer recently remarked, ‘Every day gets better’ during their Radical Left Shutdown. I DISAGREE! If no action is taken, our courageous troops could miss their rightful paychecks on October 15th due to the actions of ‘Leader’ Chuck Schumer and the Democrats. Therefore, I am exercising my authority as Commander in Chief to instruct our Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to allocate all available funds to ensure our Troops are PAID on October 15th. We have identified the necessary funds, and Secretary Hegseth will be tasked with disbursing them to PAY OUR TROOPS.”
Trump further declared, “I will not permit the Democrats to hold our Military, and indeed, the entire security of our nation, HOSTAGE due to their perilous Government Shutdown. The Radical Left Democrats need to REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT so we can collectively address healthcare and many other priorities they seem intent on dismantling. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The implications of the government shutdown extend beyond military paychecks; it has disrupted operations across multiple federal agencies, including the CDC and the IRS, potentially impacting farm programs and even affecting the renowned Smithsonian Museum.
Last Sunday, during a celebration of the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary, President Trump reassured military personnel that they would receive compensation despite the shutdown. “But we have to take care of this little gnat on our shoulder – the Democrats,” he quipped at the event.
