Observing Global Coptic Day: A Testament of Faith and Resilience

Today, I join the Coptic Orthodox Christian community in celebrating Global Coptic Day—a momentous occasion that honors the ancient heritage, vibrant culture, and devoted worship of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

With origins tracing back to Saint Mark, the apostle of Jesus Christ and the Evangelist who introduced Christianity to Egypt in the first century, the Coptic Church has stood as a stalwart of Christianity in Africa for nearly two millennia. The impact of the Coptic community is profound, leaving a legacy that resonates within the hearts of millions of Christians worldwide, particularly through their significant contributions to Christian theology and cultural heritage.

On this Global Coptic Day, we also take a solemn moment to acknowledge the brutal and ongoing persecution faced by Coptic Orthodox Christians in Africa and the Middle East. In a harrowing reminder from 2015, 21 Coptic construction workers were mercilessly executed by ISIS terrorists in Libya. Like many persecuted Christians globally, these brave martyrs stood firm in their faith—embodying sacrificial love and unwavering devotion to God, even when confronted with the specter of death. The Copts’ enduring spirit amidst relentless persecution is a powerful testament to their unyielding commitment to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

As we reflect on the remarkable contributions and the tragic sacrifices of Coptic Orthodox Christians, my Administration reaffirms its dedication to robustly defending the right to religious liberty, a fundamental principle of the American ethos. Recently, I took the initiative to establish the Religious Liberty Commission, a group of religious leaders aimed at ensuring that Americans can practice their faith freely, without government interference. Additionally, I signed an Executive Order to combat the widespread anti-Christian bias that has permeated our nation, aiming to rectify the injustices, investigations, and persecutions of faithful Christians that transpired under the previous administration.

As our Nation commemorates Global Coptic Day, we pray for a deeper love for God and a revival of religious faith both in the United States and globally. Today, and every day, may the cherished traditions of the Coptic Orthodox Christian community shine as a beacon for all Americans—and may their steadfast devotion to Christ inspire our Nation to rekindle our love, faith, and trust in Almighty God.
