On June 6, 1944, the Allied Expeditionary Force, comprising soldiers, sailors, and airmen, initiated Operation Overlord. This endeavor marked the largest amphibious assault ever undertaken in warfare, aiming to dismantle Nazi Germany’s hold on Europe.

Launched on D-Day, this massive operation was a remarkable display of synchronized land, air, and sea power. It turned a heavily defended coastline into a pivotal moment in World War II, highlighting a significant chapter in the illustrious history of the United States Armed Forces.

That morning, American troops braved the deadly shores of Omaha and Utah beaches, advancing through relentless gunfire, wave after wave, to claim the territory. Across all battlefronts, American forces exhibited unwavering determination and exceptional bravery. At Pointe du Hoc, over 225 U.S. Army Rangers scaled a 100-foot cliff using ropes and ladders, while German soldiers rained fire upon them. They fought fiercely for every inch until reaching the summit and silencing the artillery threatening the invasion below. Supported by extensive aerial operations and more than 23,000 airborne troops, American, British, and Canadian forces secured all five beachheads along 50 miles of French coastline, landing over 150,000 troops by nightfall. By the end of June, nearly a million Allied soldiers had advanced through Normandy, propelling the free world towards the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany in May 1945.

The bravery displayed on D-Day came at a tremendous cost. More than 10,000 Allied servicemen were killed, wounded, or went missing in just one day, including over 2,500 Americans who sacrificed their lives to defeat fascism and protect our Republic from a looming global threat. They answered their nation’s call without hesitation, crossing a vast ocean to unleash the full might of the United States Armed Forces against tyranny, a legacy 250 years in the making.

On this 82nd anniversary of D-Day, we honor America’s Greatest Generation—courageous men who rose to challenge immense evil. Their bravery on the Normandy beaches exemplifies the enduring spirit of Americans, a legacy forged in the fires of the deadliest conflict in human history and carried forward by successive generations. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding what they achieved, confident that no force on Earth is more formidable, just, or unstoppable than the American warrior fighting for freedom.
