Commemorating 190 Years of the Alamo: A Stand Against Tyranny

Today marks a significant milestone in history—190 years ago, a group of determined patriots bravely confronted the Mexican Army at the Battle of the Alamo. This iconic moment stands as a testament to American valor, resilience, and commitment to freedom.

The roots of this confrontation trace back to the oppressive regime of Mexican President Santa Anna, whose authoritarian rule incited outrage among Texan settlers, igniting the Texas Revolution in the fall of 1835. In his desperate attempt to quell the uprising and tighten his grip on power, Santa Anna mobilized his forces in February 1836, intent on reclaiming San Antonio de Béxar from the rebel Texans. Central to this conflict was the Alamo, a former mission that had transformed into a fortress, defended by just over 200 settlers. As Mexican forces encircled the city on February 23, the Alamo became the last bastion of defense.

On that pivotal day, over 1,800 Mexican troops unleashed a relentless barrage of cannon fire and musket volleys against the brave defenders. Among them were legendary figures such as William Travis from South Carolina, Jim Bowie from Kentucky, and Davy Crockett from Tennessee, who, alongside their fellow Texans, held strong for an extraordinary 13-day siege. Their courage not only depleted the Mexican army’s resources but also provided vital time for Sam Houston, Commander in Chief of the Texas Army, to rally additional forces that would ultimately secure Texas’ independence.

Although the Alamo fell and nearly all defenders perished, their sacrifice ignited an enduring passion that could not be quenched. The rallying cry, “Remember the Alamo,” resonated throughout Texas and inspired troops at the Battle of San Jacinto, where they decisively defeated Santa Anna and his forces, culminating in the long-awaited achievement of independence. A decade later, Texas officially became a part of the United States, forever embedding its legacy of bravery and sacrifice into the fabric of American history.

As we reflect on the 190th anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo, we honor the valiant heroes who stood against tyranny, demonstrating the profound cost of liberty. Their story serves as a powerful reminder that history is often shaped by those who stand resolutely in the face of adversity. As we approach the 250th anniversary of American independence, my Administration remains committed to defending our homeland against foreign threats and preserving the fundamental rights that position America as a preeminent bastion of freedom worldwide.
