Revisiting American Sovereignty: The Enduring Legacy of the Monroe Doctrine
On December 2, 1823, a pivotal moment in American history was etched into the annals of political doctrine when President James Monroe asserted a fundamental truth: the United States stands resolute in defending its homeland, interests, and the welfare of its citizens. Today, my Administration reaffirms this commitment through a newly crafted “Trump Corollary” to the Monroe Doctrine, emphasizing that the American people—not distant nations or globalist entities—will steer their own course in our hemisphere.
More than two centuries ago, President Monroe delivered a bold proclamation to Congress, establishing what we now recognize as the “Monroe Doctrine.” This audacious policy boldly rejects foreign meddling from distant lands while confidently asserting U.S. leadership within the Western Hemisphere. “The American continents, by their freely chosen and independent status, shall not be regarded as territories for colonization by any European powers,” Monroe declared. With these powerful words, the world was informed that the United States was emerging as an unprecedented superpower, unrivaled in its strength, unity, and determination to uphold the values of freedom.
In the years that have followed, the doctrine championed by President Monroe has served as a bulwark against threats such as communism, fascism, and foreign encroachment. As the 47th President of the United States, I am determined to reaffirm this venerable policy. Since assuming office, I have actively embraced an “America First” strategy rooted in peace through strength. We have restored U.S. preferential access through the Panama Canal, reestablished maritime supremacy, and disrupted non-market practices within global supply chains.
Furthermore, my Administration is decisively tackling the flow of illicit drugs from Mexico, curtailing the influx of illegal immigrants at our southern border, and dismantling the networks of narco-terrorism that threaten the stability of the Western Hemisphere. Recently, I secured groundbreaking trade agreements with El Salvador, Argentina, Ecuador, and Guatemala, facilitating enhanced and streamlined market access for American workers and industries. Energized by my Trump Corollary, the Monroe Doctrine remains vibrant, heralding a resurgence of American leadership that is stronger than ever.
Today, we renew our vow to uphold American sovereignty, security, and the primacy of our national interests. Most importantly, we pledge to safeguard our treasured legacy of republican self-governance against all forms of threat, whether foreign or domestic.
