Today, I extend my recognition to the countless Christian adherents in the United States and beyond who are commemorating the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel.
Drawing from sacred texts, when the forces of evil staged a rebellion against the divine in the heavens, Saint Michael, along with his celestial group, decisively cast the Devil down to Earth, reaffirming God’s ultimate authority over the cosmos. For over two millennia, Christians have sought refuge in the figure of Saint Michael the Archangel, turning to him for protection, fortitude, and bravery in the face of turmoil, despair, and uncertainty.
In 1886—almost a century and a half ago—Pope Leo XIII, concerned about the moral direction of the western world, introduced the now-iconic Prayer to Saint Michael. This powerful invocation continues to resonate within the walls of churches and homes across our nation and globally:
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our shield against the malignity and traps laid by the Devil. May God, in His mercy, rebuke him. And do thou, O Prince of celestial hosts, wielding divine power, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits that wander the earth seeking to bring souls to ruin. Amen.
