An IT project related to the overhaul of firearms regulations has been paused due to uncertainties surrounding its requirements. A recent Treasury report highlighted concerns about the ‘Arms Transformation’ project, prompting suggestions for intervention by the police minister to address significant issues.
Although the project has been rated as red in the report, the police have reassured that no significant issues have arisen. Typically, a red rating indicates doubts about the project’s successful delivery. In this case, a ‘Gateway’ review raised concerns about the ICT and system requirements needed for the potential establishment of a new regulator, which is contingent on a bill currently in Parliament.
Richard Wilson, the Firearms Safety Authority business transformation director, explained that the project has been put on hold until the legislative process progresses. Despite this setback, the Arms Transformation Programme has made positive strides since its inception, previously earning a green/amber rating. The development of a digital firearms registry has stayed within budget and is set for expansion by 2023. A review conducted last year affirmed that the registry, once fully implemented, would enhance public safety objectives.
Wilson mentioned collaboration with Treasury and the Ministry of Justice in advancing the project. While uncertainties have caused a pause in the IT project, efforts are ongoing to ensure the successful implementation of the firearms regulations overhaul.
