The push towards electric vehicles (EVs) is gaining momentum across the United States, and with it comes the need for an extensive public charging infrastructure. Companies like Racetrac, a chain of convenience stores, are recognizing the potential benefits of installing EV chargers at their locations, not just in terms of selling electricity but also as a way to attract customers and boost business.

Rushi Patel, the diversified energy manager at Metroplex Energy, a subsidiary of Racetrac, spearheaded the project to install EV chargers at the company’s stores. Starting with a blank Excel sheet, Patel meticulously analyzed various factors such as EV adoption rates, utility prices, and construction costs to determine the feasibility of the project. After conducting a tour of existing charging spots in Atlanta, Racetrac decided to invest in installing Level 3 fast chargers at their locations.

The decision paid off, as Racetrac has since installed eight chargers in three states, with Patel noting that the business model is holding up well. Studies have shown that businesses with nearby EV charging stations can see a significant increase in revenue. For example, a study in California found that businesses near chargers saw an average annual boost of $1,500, while Tesla Supercharger installations nationally led to a 4 percent increase in visitors.

Other companies like Walmart, Kohl’s, Starbucks, and Subway are also jumping on the EV charging bandwagon, recognizing the potential benefits for their businesses. By offering amenities like free charging, picnic areas, and Wi-Fi, these companies are not only attracting EV drivers but also increasing foot traffic and sales.

Despite the positive impact of EV chargers on businesses, there are still challenges to overcome. One major challenge is determining how to price electricity for charging stations, as utility costs can vary based on energy consumption and peak demand. Operators are experimenting with time-of-use pricing and dynamic pricing models to better align costs with customer pricing.

Additionally, the installation costs of EV chargers can be significant, ranging from thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the type of charger. However, federal incentives are available to help offset these costs and encourage more companies to invest in EV charging infrastructure.

Overall, the installation of EV chargers at businesses like Racetrac is proving to be a win-win situation, benefiting both the company and the environment. As EV adoption continues to grow, businesses that embrace this technology and invest in charging infrastructure are likely to see long-term benefits in terms of increased revenue and customer loyalty. The 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law has set the stage for a major shift in the transportation industry with the establishment of the $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. This program aims to revolutionize the way we power our vehicles by creating 500,000 new electric vehicle charging stations across the country by 2030. One company that is taking full advantage of this opportunity is Racetrac, a popular convenience store chain.

Racetrac recently received a substantial grant of $619,575.87 to install four electric vehicle chargers at its store in Dublin, Georgia. This strategic move not only aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability but also positions Racetrac as a leader in the transition to electric vehicles. When asked about the company’s expansion plans, a representative from Racetrac mentioned that more chargers are on the way. They expressed confidence in the decision, stating that thorough analysis and planning have gone into the process.

While specific details about Racetrac’s partnership with Metroplex Energy were not disclosed, it is clear that Racetrac is dedicated to providing accessible and reliable charging infrastructure for electric vehicle owners. By investing in these charging stations, Racetrac is not only catering to current electric vehicle users but also preparing for the expected surge in electric vehicle adoption in the coming years.

As the electric vehicle market continues to grow and evolve, companies like Racetrac are paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future. By embracing the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program and expanding their charging network, Racetrac is demonstrating their commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. With more charging stations on the horizon, Racetrac is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of transportation in America.
