Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) recently made headlines with her visit to a controversial detention facility for undocumented immigrants located at Florida’s Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, an establishment humorously dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” The details she shared about the living conditions are certainly alarming—though one might hope she was more focused on her dental hygiene than the facilities’ plumbing.
During the tour, Wasserman Schultz and fellow Democrats described the site as an “internment camp,” expressing their dismay at what they characterized as deplorable conditions. Their observations revealed an all-too-familiar picture of prison life, where the lines between basic hygiene and living quarters appear to blur uncomfortably.
In her comments to the media, Wasserman Schultz pointed out, rather unsurprisingly, that detainees are forced to brush their teeth in close proximity to their sanitation facilities. “They essentially drink, they get their drinking water, and they brush their teeth where they poop in the same unit,” she stated. To add a thin veneer of privacy, the facility boasts a three-foot wall that supposedly provides some semblance of separation between the detainees and the three toilets lining the wall.
Wasserman Schultz: “The showers provide no privacy at all. There are no curtains on it. It’s a big, open shower unit. There are small walls in each shower.”
For clarity’s sake, it should be noted that while the detainees do not drink from toilets, they do have access to sinks that are “attached” to them. This peculiar setup raises questions about the standards of care and hygiene at such facilities.
It’s essential to remember that this center operates with individuals who have committed serious offenses, not a luxury spa for the weary traveler. Established earlier this month under Governor Ron DeSantis’s directive, the facility is strategically located among Florida’s natural defenses, such as alligators, pythons, and the dense swamps of the Everglades. This setting has led to a rather grim sense of humor from former President Trump, who remarked before his visit that the idea was for the local wildlife to deter escape attempts. “I guess that’s the concept,” he quipped, adding a comedic twist about teaching escapees how to outrun alligators.
