Russell Wilson’s quest for a new contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers is one of the top quarterback storylines as we head into the final weeks of the 2024 NFL season. With many other interesting quarterback situations across the league, now is a good time to take stock of all 32 teams’ quarterback situations.

I have categorized the quarterbacks into different groups based on how their teams feel about them, from being fully committed to looking for alternatives. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key quarterback situations in the league:

  1. Committed Without Reservation
    • Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs: Mahomes has had a bit of a statistical tradeoff in recent weeks but remains a top-tier quarterback for the Chiefs.
    • Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills: Allen is a leading MVP candidate and has been everything the Bills hoped for when they drafted him.
    • Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens: Jackson is thriving under his new contract, and the Ravens are reaping the benefits of their investment in him.
    • Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals: Burrow has been impressive, despite the Bengals’ defensive struggles.
    • Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers: Herbert continues to perform well, even as the Chargers rely more on their defense.
  2. Committed And Hoping The Sky Is The Limit
    • Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers: Love has shown promise in his early career and is being groomed as the future starter in Green Bay.
    • C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans: Stroud’s production has declined, but the Texans are hopeful he can bounce back.
  3. Committed And Content
    • Jared Goff, Detroit Lions: Goff has been a solid quarterback for the Lions, replicating his Super Bowl season with the Rams.
    • Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles: Hurts has been efficient for the Eagles, even as they rely more on their defense and running game.
    • Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals: Murray has matured and is leading the Cardinals effectively.
    • Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys: Prescott’s future is uncertain due to a season-ending injury and a hefty contract.
    • Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Mayfield has been a solid addition for the Buccaneers, providing good returns on their investment.
  4. Committed And Content, With No Guarantees
    • Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams: Stafford’s contract gives the Rams flexibility to explore other options in the future.
    • Geno Smith, Seattle Seahawks: Smith has struggled this season, and the Seahawks may look to explore other options.
  5. Committed With Concerns
    • Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins: Tagovailoa’s value to the Dolphins has been evident, but questions remain about his long-term health.
    • Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars: Lawrence has shown potential, but the Jaguars are still evaluating his long-term viability.
  6. Committed Until No Longer Committed
    • Derek Carr, New Orleans Saints: Carr’s future with the Saints is uncertain, as the team looks to set a new course at quarterback.
    • Kirk Cousins, Atlanta Falcons: Cousins’ production has declined, and the Falcons may look to their rookie quarterback as the future starter.
  7. Committed, But At What Value?
    • Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers: Purdy has been a bargain for the 49ers, but questions remain about his long-term value.
    • Russell Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers: Wilson’s one-year deal with the Steelers has been a steal, and he has the opportunity to secure a long-term future in Pittsburgh.
  8. Lots to Play For Down The Stretch With Contract Talks Ahead
    • Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders: Daniels has showcased his talent, and the Commanders are optimistic about his future.
    • Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears: Williams has shown improvement under a new coordinator, and the Bears are hopeful for his future.
  9. Evaluating: Long Runways
    • Bo Nix, Denver Broncos: Nix has performed well and could be a long-term option for the Broncos.
    • Drake Maye, New England Patriots: Maye has shown promise and needs support to continue his development.
  10. Evaluating: Clock Is Ticking
    • Bryce Young, Carolina Panthers: Young has shown improvement after being benched, and the Panthers are hopeful for his future.
    • Anthony Richardson, Indianapolis Colts: Richardson has shown potential but needs to improve his consistency.
  11. Evaluating: Need An Alternative
    • Will Levis, Tennessee Titans: Levis has struggled, and the Titans may look for an upgrade at quarterback.
    • Aidan O’Connell, Las Vegas Raiders: O’Connell has shown potential and could play his way into the Raiders’ future plans.
  12. Thank You For Your Service (And The Future Comp Pick)
    • Sam Darnold, Minnesota Vikings: Darnold has played well but may not have a long-term future with the Vikings.
  13. Likely Headed to Free Agency as a Bridge Starter/Backup
    • Jameis Winston, Cleveland Browns: Winston has shown flashes but may not be a long-term starter for the Browns.
    • Daniel Jones, Minnesota Vikings: Jones could fill a backup role for the Vikings or explore other options in free agency.
  14. We’re Looking For A Way Out
    • Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns: Watson’s contract is a burden for the Browns, and they may look to move on from him in the future.

Each team’s quarterback situation is unique, and the final weeks of the season will provide more clarity on the future of these quarterbacks. Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses.
