Love hotels in Japan are not just places to stay for a few hours—they are a reflection of the country’s culture and values. Photographer François Prost embarked on a road trip across Japan to document the facades of these unique establishments during a trip in 2023. Inspired by the expressive design of love hotels, Prost captured the colorful and quirky architecture that defines these venues.

Love hotels, also known as boutique or fashion hotels, offer rooms at affordable rates for short stays. Prost, known for his series documenting strip clubs and nightclubs in various countries, saw love hotels as an opportunity to explore the visual language of Japanese culture. From ships and castles to flowers and even a giant pink whale, the designs of these hotels are meant to evoke romance, escape, and fantasy.

In his latest series titled “Love Hotel,” Prost showcases the creativity and attention to detail that goes into the design of these establishments. With estimates ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 love hotels in Japan, each one has its own unique aesthetic that reflects the desires and fantasies of its clientele. Some hotels have a playful, almost Disney-like aesthetic, while others exude a sense of sophistication and elegance.

Prost has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a book that highlights the visual splendor of Japanese love hotels. The book will showcase the diversity of designs and the cultural significance of these venues in Japan. Through his photographs, Prost hopes to capture the essence of these establishments and invite viewers to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into their creation.

With his unique perspective and keen eye for detail, Prost’s “Love Hotel” series offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of Japanese hospitality and design. It’s a beautiful day in the city as the sun shines brightly and a gentle breeze blows through the streets. People are out and about, enjoying the warm weather and taking advantage of the opportunity to explore all that the city has to offer.

One popular destination for both locals and tourists alike is the bustling market square. Here, vendors line the cobblestone streets, selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. The air is filled with the scent of freshly baked bread and grilled meats, enticing visitors to sample the local cuisine.

As visitors wander through the market square, they are treated to a feast for the senses. Colorful flowers bloom in every direction, their petals reaching towards the sky in a riot of hues. The sound of laughter and chatter fills the air, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere.

In addition to the market square, the city is home to a number of stunning historical landmarks. From ancient cathedrals to grand palaces, there is no shortage of architectural marvels to explore. Visitors can wander through the narrow streets and alleyways, stumbling upon hidden gems at every turn.

For those looking to relax and unwind, the city’s parks and gardens provide the perfect escape. Lush greenery surrounds tranquil ponds and winding pathways, offering a serene oasis in the midst of the bustling city. Visitors can sit on a bench and soak in the beauty of their surroundings, listening to the birds chirping and the leaves rustling in the wind.

As the day turns to night, the city comes alive with a different kind of energy. Restaurants and cafes spill out onto the sidewalks, their tables adorned with flickering candles and colorful flowers. The sound of clinking glasses and lively conversation fills the air, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.

Whether exploring the vibrant market square, admiring the stunning architecture, or simply taking a leisurely stroll through the parks, there is no shortage of things to see and do in this beautiful city. With its rich history, stunning landmarks, and welcoming atmosphere, it’s no wonder that visitors from near and far flock to this enchanting destination.
