Red Sox insider lists factors keeping Bo Bichette out of Boston

After an exceptional 2025 season, Bo Bichette has become a highly coveted free agent in the MLB market. Rumors have been circulating about the infielder potentially signing with the Boston Red Sox. However, according to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, fans should not get their hopes up too high as the Red Sox may not be willing to engage in a bidding war for Bichette.

Bradford believes that the Red Sox’s top priority is to re-sign Alex Bregman, who had a stellar season in 2025 with a .273 batting average, 18 home runs, and 62 RBIs. Bregman’s contributions were instrumental in the Red Sox’s playoff qualification and he has become a fan favorite at Fenway Park. Despite this, contract negotiations with Bregman seem to have hit a snag due to disagreement over the contract value.

In a surprising turn of events, reports suggest that the Red Sox’s interest in Bichette could be a strategic move to pressure Bregman into accepting their offer. NESN’s Lou Merloni speculates that the rumors about the Red Sox turning their attention to Bichette might be a tactic to push Bregman and his agent to agree to the terms on the table.

Both Bichette and Bregman are expected to command contracts in the ballpark of $150 million, making them two of the most expensive targets in the free-agent market. The Red Sox’s decision to pursue Bichette could be a calculated move to leverage their negotiations with Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras.

Ultimately, the Red Sox’s interest in Bichette may just be a part of the media games played during the offseason. Whether they end up signing Bichette or re-signing Bregman, it remains to be seen how the negotiations will unfold. One thing is for sure, the Red Sox are playing their cards strategically in the pursuit of securing their lineup for the upcoming season.
